Drum type brakes have been tried and proven in the industry for almost a century. They stop well and are very dependable. They do however have their drawbacks. The design of drum type brakes tends to hold in “brake dust”. Brake dust is a normal byproduct produced in very small amounts every time we use our brakes. Dust can build up and eventually lead to other problems such as leaking wheel cylinders, leaking axle seals and unwanted noises. For these reasons we recommend a drum brake service. This procedure cleans this dust as well as inspects the brake shoe wear and the condition of the wheel cylinder and axle seal. At the same time, we also will adjust the parking brake if applicable. Usually the rear brake drums will last about twice as long as the front brakes. For this reason we recommend this service at the same time as the front brakes are relined.
