Most modern vehicles have a system called POWER STEERING. It helps us to turn the steering while the
Vehicle is stopped and at slow speeds. This is when the steering is hardest to turn. It also works to smooth out the feel of the steering at faster speeds. The system used a fluid pump and series of valves, cylinders and lines for this purpose. The pressures in the power steering can get as high as 1700 pounds per square inch. The pressure Is highest when we are turning while stopped or at slow speeds. This pressure creates heat. Pressure and heat wears out the hydraulic fluid. Also the metal parts of the system wear, contaminating the fluid with metal particles. When the fluid gets worn and contaminated it does not lubricate the system very well. This can lead to excessive wear and very expensive repairs.
We recommend a power steering service to flush out the worn out fluid and metal contaminants. The more around town and parking lot driving that is done, the sooner this service should be done. We recommend it be done between 60,000 and 100,000 miles or anytime the system is being repaired for any other reason.
